We questioned glassblowers about their pipes and punty rods. We knew we could improve the existing products and solve the three most often cited problems:
Welds That Crack Typical pipes and hollow punty rods are welded only once at the head. When they are hot and must bear the weight of glass, a "hinge" effect occurs. Hinging stretches and compresses the weld bead—the weld weakens, then cracks. Our pipes and punty heads are triple welded, and our joints are beveled for maximum weld penetration.
Before we insert the tange of the head into the body, we bevel the weld joint and drill two perpendicular holes. The initial weld is in the bevel for maximum penetration. The second weld fills the remainder of the bevel. The final step is welding through the holes in the body to the head tange. This creates a weldment that resists cracking (Diagram A).

Pipes and Punty Rods That Bend Our Pipes and punty rods are available in stainless steel or Chrome-moly 4130. Most standard stainless pipes have a wall thickness of .065 inches. True, this is a lightweight pipe, but it is more susceptible to bending. Our standard stainless steel pipes have a wall thickness of .095 inches.
Jeff's finest mountain bikes were built from Chrome-moly 4130 aircraft tubing. It's light and stiff, and that's why we chose it to make pipes and punty rods. It's steel, so it will oxidize. True, it doesn't look pretty, but we think the texture of the oxidation enhances the grip. A little steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad will remove any annoying oxidation.
To prevent scale from accumulating in the pipe, Jeff designed a beveled edge for the part of the mouthpiece that is inserted into the body. This acts as a funnel, channeling particles in the pipe to fall out easily when the pipe is inverted (Diagram B).
