Our shears look different, because they are different. It's a difference you can see, and it's a difference you can feel. Here's why.
Blade Material Through research and experimentation, Jeff identified the steel best suited for glass shears—D2. D2 contains high percentages of chrome and carbon—ingredients that ensure rust resistance, wear resistance, hardness, and precision. Heat treated, D2 receives the following ratings from Ducommun Metals Company's Metals Stock List:
Wear Resistance: Best
Red Hardness: Good
Non-Deforming: Best
These features ensure that our blades will resist glass dust abrasion, will not lose temper with extended heat exposure, and will not bend.
Production Because D2 is hard, our shear blades are cut by a CNC water jet machine. The benefits of this are twofold:
Precision cutting is guaranteed because our blueprint is transferred directly to the CNC computer.
No stress is involved; therefore, cracking that occurs when blades are sheared or stamped from a sheet of steel is eliminated.
The Cutting Edge Initial bevels of the cutting edge are shaped on a mill prior to heat treatment. The final step in crafting our shears is hand grinding the double-beveled cutting edge—it retains its sharpness and is less affected by prolonged exposure to heat.
Handles
Our handles are available in two sizes; regular and small. They are bent on a mandrel to produce uniform shape; then rubberized for comfort and grip.
Attaching Handles to the Blades The handles are attached to the blade by TIG welding with silicon-bronze. By design, there is a generous weld bead between the handles and blades. As a result, the handles won't break off our shears! Note that the weld bead is not ground off, we want the quality of the weld to show.
Hardware Every detail in the design and construction of our shears has been considered—even the fasteners that hold the blades together. We use stainless steel button-head cap screws and a Nylok-type nut so they stay tight and are rust resistant. The screws and nuts are low profile—a feature that reduces snagging.
